What is a curb cut?

A curb cut is a dip in a sidewalk and curb that enables a vehicle to drive to a driveway, garage, parking lot, loading dock or drive-through. Before beginning a curb cut project, the Department must approve the proposed plans to confirm that the design meets safety and zoning requirements.

Installation of plates, etc. is against the law

To bridge the gap between the parking lot and the road, metal plates or ramps are sometimes installed to allow vehicles to enter safely.

Not only do these actions violate the Road Act, but they can also cause pedestrians to trip and motorbike and bicycle accidents, and the installer may be held liable.

Also, on rainy days, they can block the flow of rainwater, impeding drainage of the road surface and causing water to accumulate on the road surface, causing traffic obstructions.

The parking ramp installation issue was also covered by Yahoo! JAPAN News

About application and fees

  • There is a step on the sidewalk and I can’t drive my car into the garage or parking lot.
  • I’ve remodeled and moved the garage, so I want to change where the sidewalk steps up.
  • Now that I know the ramp installation is illegal, so I want to have it done.

In such cases, you can apply to the local government and get approval to shorten the sidewalk, increase its width, or change its position.

The price will also vary depending on whether or not street lights, utility poles, plants, manholes, and storm water pipes are included.

Yamashiro Doboku, a group of professional civil engineers, specializes in these removal and relocation tasks, so we are able to shorten construction times and make costs down more than other companies.

    About Curb Cuts

    From Wikipedia

A curb cut (U.S.), curb ramp, depressed curb, dropped kerb (UK), pram ramp, or kerb ramp (Australia) is a solid (usually concrete) ramp graded down from the top surface of a sidewalk to the surface of an adjoining street. It is designed primarily for pedestrian usage and commonly found in urban areas where pedestrian activity is expected. In comparison with a conventional curb (finished at a right angle 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) above the street surface) a curb cut is finished at an intermediate gradient that connects both surfaces, sometimes with tactile paving.
